Pasadena Humane Society offers different types of classes designed specifically for the age group and size of dogs participating. Classes run for five weeks with the exception of the CGC class.

Class Descriptions:

AKC - Canine Good Citizen- this is an eight week class for any age or size dog. Dog must have graduated at least the basic class held at the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. Dogs get tested by an outside examiner at the end. This an extraordinary program and a great opportunity to qualify your dog as a Canine Good Citizen.

Puppy Kindergarten Class - for puppies 2 to 5 months only. This is a five week course focusing on Puppy socialization. Typical puppy behavior problems such as housetraining & play biting will be covered plus basic training such as sit, down and come when called.

Adolescent Basic Class - dogs 6 months to 2 years. This is a five week course focusing on basic training plus some problem solving of learnt and established behaviors such as jumping up and attention seeking. Basic training such as sit, down, stay, slack leash walking and come when called.

Adult Basic Class - dogs 2 years and older. This is a five week course focusing on basic training plus some problem solving of learnt and established behaviors such as jumping up and attention seeking. Basic training such as sit, down, stay, slack leash walking and come when called.

Small Dog Basic Classes - This class is specifically designed for small breed dogs and their very special and individual needs. This is a five week course focusing on basic training plus some problem solving of learnt and established behaviors such as jumping up and attention seeking. Basic training such as sit, down, stay, slack leash walking and come when called.

Intermediate Classes - The intermediate classes will be an extension of the beginner classes continuing with socialization. More complex behaviors will be taught such as food refusal, go to your bed, finessing leash walking, distraction training, recalls and more.

Open Basic Class - This class is for dogs 6 months and older. This is a five week course focusing on basic training plus some problem solving of learnt and established behaviors such as jumping up and attention seeking. Basic training such as sit, down, stay, slack leash walking and come when called.

Each class is limited to 10 puppies or dogs. All dogs must be spayed or neutered with the exception of Puppy Kindergarten.

Our classes give you the tools to:

  • Socialize and help your puppy or dog become a member of your family
  • Teach your puppy or dog to respond to basic commands such as sit, stay, down, come and walk on a slack leash
  • Increase your puppy's confidence
  • Help with housetraining, and reducing chewing, digging, jumping and play-bite behavior
You must show proof that your puppy or dog is current on all vaccinations, provide a flat collar and a 4 or 6 foot leash, as well as bring your own yummy treats and toys for reinforcement. Families are welcome.

Instructor Penny Scott-Fox, a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT), is a Fellow of the Pet Behavior Institute, Durham, England. Penny's experience training shelter dogs and evaluating their behaviors has been recognized by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Penny lectures at Pierce College about pet behavior. Through the use of reward-based methods, she has solved pet behavior problems for hundreds of dogs in our community.
