Many people don't realize we take in every kind of animal - including
rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and other small pets. See photos
of all these pets in our shelter right now on our view
animals page. Below are photos of the hutches and rabbit play
yards. In 2006 the rabbits were moved into rolling hutches (photo
below) under the shelter of the collonade while their indoor area
is designed and contstructed.
The rabbit play yards were added in January, 2002 in our wildlife
area, located behind the regular rabbit hutches. The bunnies can be
seen by the public in a much healthier environment, where they have
room to hop, dig and play. Free access to hay and fresh greens completes
the rabbit play area. Pictured below is Lancelot, aka Sir Digsalot,
who was adopted in February. Despite his impressive tunneling and
hole digging, we weren't worried about escaping, as the dirt is entirely
contained in concrete, like a mini dirt-filled swimming pool. Volunteers
also now have a safe place that they can hold and groom the rabbits
(the small cement area just behind the fence in the photo) on a regular
basis.
The bunny play area is divided into two separate yards, so that more
rabbits can be rotated out of their hutches for daily "hop"
time. Below is the north play yard.
