Pasadena: Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA would like to express our
sadness for the tragic events in the Foothill Ranch Region of Orange County.
In order to discourage future incidents we would like to offer suggestions
for those people who frequent and live in wildlife area.
An important part of the natural ecosystem, mountain lions may be seen
in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. As human developments encroach
historically wild areas, sightings and encounters become more likely.
Often confused with bobcats, mountain lions are distinguished by their
long tails, rounded ears.
Residents in the foothill areas may take measures to discourage these
and other predators:
· Keep your pets inside, especially at night.
· Remove outdoor pet food.
· Trim overgrown vegetation.
· Pick up fallen fruit and remove outdoor bird feeders.
· Empty outdoor water dishes and birdbaths at dusk.
Safety tips:
· Enjoy the outdoors with a friend - the buddy system is the best.
· Keep young children close and dogs on leash.
If you encounter a mountain lion:
· Make yourself look big, stand tall and hold your hands above
your head or open your jacket.
· Pick up small children and pets.
· Act aggressively by throwing rocks and yelling at the animal.
· NEVER turn your back and run.
We hope these suggestions will help you enjoy the outdoors safely.
