Quick links: Photos of Found Katrina Pets at our shelter - Donate to our Hurricane Fund

Hurricane Katrina left both humans and animals homeless and needing assistance. Hundreds of volunteers from around the world responded to the need for help, including four Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA staff, picked from the long list of other staff who also wanted to go, selected for the specialized skills they could provide. Dr. Susy Horowitz, our shelter's vet. Julie Storey, Animal Control Officer and former police. Jeannie Broussard, certified Veterinary Technician. Jennifer Warner, computer specialist. Jeannie and Jennifer were designed to drive the fully-equiped Animal Control truck that PHS would be donating to the decimated Louisiana SPCA, and the other two flying in to meet them in Houston. From there they would then continue on to Gonzales, Louisana, the site of the Lamar Dixon fairgrounds which was the site of the emergency temporary animal shelter housing up to 2,000 animals as they were rescued from New Orleans.

Dozens of photos taken by our staff while in Louisiana:

The PHS staff in Pasadena not only covered for the absenses of the four key personnel, they accepted into their care 17 animals air-lifted into Los Angeles from the disaster area. Photos of these Hurricane Katrina Pets may be seen here, as well as listed on the national databases Petfinder.com and Petharbor.com, as we hope their owners will see them and reclaim them - as is happening with Oreo. The pets are all being kept in boarding and supplementary kennel space, so that their intake would not effect our currently housed homeless animal population. In mid October, after their quarantine is up, they will go into local foster care homes, with permanent adoption being allowed starting December 31, 2005.

These efforts have been made financially possible thanks to the generosity of our community. You may donate to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA Hurricane Relief Fund online by clicking here.

Thank you.
